NGOs for dogs| Abandoned Dogs| Adopt a dog|Stray dogs
We
all are very well known with conditions our stray dog wandering around the
Indian roads. These poor creatures have to fight every day with hunger,
weather, traffic and most important the common people of the society for their
survival. Most of the people are afraid of these dogs and consider them unwanted,
but it’s hard to explain to them that even after not having a place to
live, no food to eat, and no love and affection, they still not bother people
until they feel threatened.
They only react aggressively only when they are
being beaten up or tortured immensely by people. Most of these even after
facing such adversary and not being socialized with people, still are very
friendly. You can see this for yourself by just calling out with all the love
and a whistle, and they will respond with happy faces and wagging tail.
Sadly,
this behavior is not often seen from society towards these beautiful creatures
instead, those who care for them are often criticized and stopped. We have many
examples in our society wherein people who used to feed these stray, care for
them and lend a helping hand to protect these poor souls were being threatened
by the neighbor and in extreme cases some were also asked to vacate their
apartment and relocate especially in Co-operative housing societies in
metropolitan areas. People have made a perception about these strays that these
are dangerous, ugly creatures that are dirty carrying diseases which could harm
people if they come in contact with them which is not true at all.
On the other hand researches and studies have proven this these stray could be as
healthy as a pedigreed breed dog and can be a very good family dog if properly
domesticated. But even after having such sort of researches, it's very
difficult to change people’s perception and their attitude towards these
strays. In order to change this perception of people, the role of NGOs and
rehab-centers in India is really important which is working night and day
towards the betterment of these strays.
These
NGOs and Organizations like PETA (People For Ethical Treatment Of Animals), POSH Foundation, AMTM (Animals Matter to me Mumbai), Paws for cause, and
many more are doing a commendable job when it comes to saving these strays and
giving them a new life.
I have personally visited a few of the shelters of the
most renowned organizations such as AMTM wherein these strays along with the
other breeds as well which have been abandoned because of health issues,
temperament, road accidents, and mostly irresponsible owners are being
taken very good care of. They have a dedicated trained staff along with
volunteers as well who are working every hour of the day trying to rescue,
rehabilitate and rehome these unfortunate ones who have already seen the worst
part of their life.
Cases
of such kind like abandonment, injured, etc are very common now and are even
increasing every day. Organizations like these having limited resources and
space are often unable to attend each and every case as these run mainly on
trust funding and sponsorships or donations in kind which are the only sources
for survival of these NGOs.
These organizations have to bear all sorts of costs
while taking care of these strays such as food, shelter cages, medicines, space
for adding a number of cases every day and also for the trained staff who could
handle them properly. Also, these organizations attend the cases which are the
most terrible ones requiring urgent help and care which again involve repeated
surgery and all thereby increasing the operational costs overall.
Moreover
keeping so many dogs in single enclosed spaces can also lead to aggression and
temperament issues in them which could make the situation more worst. So they
need to have a proper infrastructure which would include a clinic and operation
area to attend cases of extreme urgency, kennels individually for dogs,
separate areas to keep the infected ones away so that they could properly be
treated, play and training area to socialize them for rehabilitation, mobile
ambulances which would carry out rescue operations and finally all the
necessary equipment and assets which would be required in the process.
These
NGOs are really important for both strays and society as well because these are
the only link between the two which would be very much needed to live together
in harmony without any sort of tussle. Also, they are the ones who can change
people’s perceptions of these beautiful creatures. Here are some activities
which are carried out by these organizations to help for the stray and the
abandon one.
Rescue
Programme - These NGOs are every time on alert basis ready to help and
rescue cases such as accident, acute illness, abandonment and brutal assault of
these strays so that they can be saved in time and can be given a new life.
Medical
care and treatments – For those cases which
need urgent medical attention are given every sort of medical care whether it
be surgery or so and is carried out by trained veterinarians.
Rehome and Rehabilitation – These stray when reviving back to their finest conditions after proper care and affection are being rehabilitated with foster or families who are willing to make them a part of their lives.
Socialize and trained- These stray and or in the case of abandoned ones are so depressed and anxiety affected that these need to be socialized and trained at a level so that they could easily fit into a family or being adopted.
Neuter and Birth Control- These organizations have a major role
in controlling the population of these strays by neuter programs so that their
population is kept in check which would otherwise lead to an imbalance in
society and will worsen the situation.
Awareness – These organizations play a major
role in spreading the awareness regarding these stray in the society so that
people should not abuse them and treat them ethically.
Hope for the unfortunate Ones- These also are the only last hope for
those ones like paralyzed, senior or aggressive ones which would never be
adopted ever in their life and find comfort in these shelters till their last days.
Protection Of Rights for the
Stray Dogs–
These strays in the society do have certain rights for themselves which
refrain people from abusing or torturing them for any reason and these NGOs are
taking active role to get these rights implemented in society.
